Ni Nyoman Clara Listya Dewi is a National Geographic Explorer and Managing Director at at BASAbali Wiki, a nonprofit organization based in the US and in Bali, Indonesia to strengthen the role of youth to address civic issues with the government through creative digital platforms in local (Balinese) languages. Clara has been with BASAbali Wiki for almost 7 years where she has been directing Luh Ayu Manik Mas project since her inception, including the development of several books, a 2D animation pilot, and a 3D animation teaser. Clara has also been managing Luh Ayu’s social media presence and the use of Luh Ayu books in schools in the US (with the support of the Indonesian Embassy) and in Indonesia (with support of the US State Department).
Now, in her position as managing director, she is responsible for ensuring that the organization's mission, vision, and goals are achieved. Clara must develop strategies to achieve the desired social impact per the organization's goals and manage programs and coordination between internal staff and partners. Some programs currently running at BASAbali Wiki are the Public Participation Wikithon, the Trilingual Digital Dictionary, and the community space. Clara has published several articles, publications, and book chapters. One of them is an article that published in Smithsonian magazine with the title Marvels with Purpose: A Balinese Superhero Powered by Community.
Her interest in literacy and culture issues led her to become part of the BASAbali Wiki. Several work programs have been implemented, such as the development of a trilingual dictionary and virtual library. With the main spirit of 'involving the community', Clara and the BASAbali Wiki team held a Wiki Marathon competition (Wiki Marathon), a competition to enter entries into the BASAbali wiki virtual dictionary and library in Balinese on various issues. Such as inter-religious, misinformation, environment, economy, and Covid-19 specific issues. In addition, Clara is also trusted as the coordinator and producer for the book project of the Balinese female hero series named Luh Ayu Manik Mas, which is also made in three languages. In addition to books, Luh Ayu Manik Mas's project has been developed in the form of 2D and 3D animation. This project led to Clara getting a grant from the National Geographic Society in 2019. Clara believes that preserving the language and culture where she was born is her responsibility as a person born and raised in Bali. The hope is that what she has done can be an inspiration for other young people to take real steps to preserve the language and culture of their respective regions by remaining open to digitalization and the progress of the times.
